Dollar Store Dinners (Ongoing)
Dollar Store Dinners reflects what I ate growing up as a child of poverty, and where I have come to today. People living in poverty have always found ways to survive; they must, for that is the human way of being. My parents, and my mother in particular, had to get creative in where meals came from or how they got to our table – be it the dollar store, the foodbank, the grocery store, you name it. When I got older and began learning about systems of power and oppression, it was wild to me to learn about food insecurity in a cold, academic, almost detached manner.

Dollar Store Dinners honours what it takes to feed a family, what I ate as a child, by showing plain and simple what it may have looked like. Photographing these dishes with restaurant quality is how I honour not only my parent’s tenacity in getting us fed, but that all paths lead to our beautiful and simple lives today. Indeed, honouring these meals with quality care given to cookbook images counters the narrative that those in poverty are deserving first of pity.
